About Samui Scooter Rental

Thailand's most trusted way to rent a scooter

Our Story

Skoot was founded to solve one of the biggest headaches travelers face in Thailand: scooter rental scams. For years, tourists have been ripped off by dishonest rental shops — passport holds as “deposits,” fake damage claims after returning a bike, and hidden charges that double the advertised price. We knew there had to be a better way.

So we built Skoot — a platform that connects travelers with verified, vetted rental shops, and crucially, we hold your deposit ourselves. When a shop wants to make a damage claim, they submit it to Skoot for approval with photos and a fair repair invoice. You get to review and dispute it through the app. The shop cannot simply pocket your money or hold your passport hostage. Every booking comes with a digital contract, transparent pricing, and 24/7 English-speaking support. If something goes wrong, we step in and handle it.

Today, Skoot operates across 10+ cities in Thailand — from Phuket and Chiang Mai to Koh Samui, Pai, and Bangkok. Thousands of happy riders have explored Thailand on two wheels with us, and we are just getting started. Samui Scooter Rental is the local face of Skoot in Koh Samui, making it easy for visitors to find a safe, affordable scooter the moment they arrive.

How We Verify Shops in Koh Samui

Koh Samui is a small island and the rental scene is concentrated around Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam, and the airport. Before any shop is allowed to list on Skoot, a member of our team visits in person. We inspect the fleet for tread depth, brake condition, working lights and indicators, and suspension wear. We check that every scooter has a valid green book (registration) and current tax sticker, and we confirm the shop carries third-party insurance through a Thai insurer.

We also sit down with the owner and walk through their damage-claim history. Any shop with a pattern of inflated claims, passport holds, or unresolved tourist complaints is rejected. Once a shop joins, every booking generates a digital handover record with date-stamped photos of the scooter at pickup and return, so there is no ambiguity if a claim is ever made later. Shops that fall below a 4.5-star rolling average across 30 days are paused and re-audited. This is the same vetting process Skoot runs in Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok — the only difference in Samui is that the island is small enough that we can re-visit partner shops every couple of months in person.

Why Koh Samui is Made for Scooters

Koh Samui is one of the few Thai islands with its own international airport (USM), and the moment you land you realise how spread out the island is. Chaweng is 20 minutes from Lamai, Lamai is another 30 minutes from the south coast, and the quiet north-west beaches of Maenam and Bang Por are a world away from the nightlife strip. Taxis on Samui are notoriously expensive — a single airport transfer to Lamai can cost more than three days of scooter rental. A scooter pays for itself before you have finished your first coffee.

The island is built around Route 4169, a 50-kilometre ring road that loops the entire coastline. It is mostly flat, well-paved, and unlike the chaos of Phuket or Bangkok, the traffic is manageable even for first-time riders. You can circle the whole island in under two hours, stop at Hin Ta Hin Yai, the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, Na Muang waterfalls, and Fisherman's Village along the way, and still be back at your villa for sunset.

Samui also makes a great base for families and couples who want the freedom of two wheels without the party-island intensity of nearby Koh Phangan. Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party and a much rowdier backpacker scene; Samui is calmer, has better hospitals, more reliable infrastructure, and a wider range of accommodation from hostels to five-star resorts. If you want to explore Phangan for the night, the Lomprayah and Raja ferries from Nathon and Big Buddha pier take scooters across in 20 to 45 minutes — and Skoot partner shops can issue a permission letter so you can take your rental on the ferry without hassle.

That combination — an international airport, a paved ring road, a family-friendly vibe, and easy ferry access to neighbouring islands — is why we built a dedicated Samui presence.
