Sitting just south of Chaweng on the east coast, Lamai has a 4 km beach, a less developed strip of restaurants and bars, and a reputation as the family-friendly and long-stay base of the island. Prices are noticeably cheaper than Chaweng, the vibe is slower, and you can still reach everywhere on Samui quickly by scooter.
The famous Hin Ta Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother rocks) are at the south end of Lamai — two natural rock formations that are a standard Samui photo stop. Lamai is also the nearest base to the Namuang waterfalls, which are inland off the ring road and reachable in about 15 minutes by scooter.

Lamai's beach road and ring road are well-paved and in good condition. The main hazard is the Lad Koh viewpoint climb to Chaweng — steep, twisty, and notorious. The inland road to Namuang is well-paved but has some rough patches. The south coastal ring road has a few twisty sections around the Hin Ta Hin Yai area.
